Svensk EU-politiker kritisk mot burka

I sin blogg berättar EU-parlamentarikern Cecilia Wikström (FP) hur hon i Uppsala för första gången såg en kvinna i burka, ett möte hon beskriver med orden: ”det kändes faktiskt inte alls bra”. Hon framhäver att för att en människa ska kunna delta i samhället, rösta i allmänna val, fatta beslut och underteckna kontrakt måste man kunna se varandra i ögonen och skaka hand.
– Den anonymitet som en burkaklädd kvinna påvisar stämmer inte med hur jag ser på individens plats i en modern demokrati, skriver Wikström i bloggen.
Cecilia Wikström vill däremot markera att hon inte stödjer ett europeiskt förbud, vilket Europaparlamentets vice talman, liberala Silvana Koch-Mehrin, gör. Wikström anser att det är upp till varje land att själv ta ett sådant beslut. Däremot har hon förståelse och sympatiserar med Koch-Mehrins tankegångar.
– I Sverige menar jag därför att niqab eller burka inte kan ses som eller accepteras som ett religiöst plagg. Den tar nämligen ifrån individen hennes rättigheter, skriver Wikström.
Ett eventuellt förbud mot heltäckande klädesplagg har varit ett aktuellt ämne i flera europeiska länder under våren. Belgien var nära att som första land rösta igenom ett förbud men hindrades av regeringskris. Förslaget röstades igenom av ett enigt underhus och överhuset förväntas följa efter även om frågan just nu ligger på is.
I Frankrike har president Nicolas Sarkozy varit en ivrig förespråkare av burkaförbudet. Regeringen väntas lägga fram ett lagförslag på onsdag och parlamentet kan då ta ställning i frågan tidigast i juli. Den franska regeringsrätten håller däremot fast vid att förslaget inte kommer att kunna vila på någon rättslig grund.
